- How do I choose which B-cycle to check out from a B-station?
The bikes are all the same size. But thanks to clever design and an easily adjustable seat post, they fit people from 5'0" to well over 6'4" tall. As part of your selection process, you should inspect your preferred bike to make sure it is ready to ride. Click here for instructions on how to inspect a bike. The only adjustment you need to make before riding is to raise or lower the seat post (if necessary). Click here for instructions on how to adjust the seat post to get the seat at the right height.
- What do I need to know about riding a B-cycle?
To familiarize yourself with the B-cycle’s features, we have prepared a guide that explains how to use the brakes, gears, bell, kickstand and other bicycle features. We also strongly recommend you read our Safety Guide. And always wear a helmet!
- Is it legal to ride a bike without a helmet?
Neither Des Moines nor the State of Iowa statutes require helmets to be worn while operating a bicycle. However, Des Moines B-cycle strongly recommends wearing a helmet whenever riding a bike.
- Does Des Moines B-cycle provide helmets for riders?
No. There are hygiene and safety issues with shared helmet use. It is the responsibility of the rider to supply his/her own helmet.
When you purchase a helmet at a local bike shop, the sales staff will happily help you with a proper fit.
- Can minors participate in Des Moines B-cycle?
No. Des Moines B-cycle is only open to people 18 and older.
- Is Des Moines B-cycle available 24/7 year-round?
Following our launch in September 2010, the Des Moines B-cycle system will be operational from March 1 to November 30 each year, weather permitting. When operational, the Des Moines B-cycle system allows bike checkouts from 5:00 am to 10:00 pm seven days a week.
- What if I want to return a bike during non-system hours?
Bikes can be returned any time, 24 hours a day. Three beeps and three green blinks indicate a successful return.
- What if a bike I have checked out has a problem?
Return a damaged bike to a B-station if possible and contact Customer Service at 515-333-5590 so we can attend to the bike. If it is not possible to return the bike to a station, contact Customer Service. Do not ride a bike with damage that affects your safety.
- What if I lose the key to the bike’s built-in lock?
Contact Customer Service at 515-333-5590. There is a $10 fee for key replacement.
- What happens if my bike is lost or stolen?
During the time you have a bike, you are responsible for the bike, as detailed in the Terms and Conditions. Contact Customer Service at 515-333-5590 and be prepared to make a police statement. You may be liable up to $1,000 if a bike is stolen or lost while in your possession (see User Agreement). Help Des Moines B-cycle succeed, treat a B-cycle as you would your own bike!
- What if I am involved in an accident?
- Call 911 if there has been an injury.

- Exchange and collect information with any affected or associated parties or witnesses.

- What if I want to reserve a bike?
Des Moines B-cycle does not allow members to reserve a bike.
- What if I want to keep a bike all day or longer?
Des Moines B-cycle is a bike-sharing system designed to promote the constant use and turnover of bikes for short journeys. It's good to share!
The pricing system provides incentives for members to keep their trips short. See Des Moines B-cycle Rates. The longer the trip, the higher the usage fee. Bikes that are not returned within a three-day limit will be considered lost or stolen and members will be liable for a B-cycle replacement fee of $1,000 (see User Agreement).

- How do I find stations?
This Web site provides a map of all B-stations with real-time information about their status. An iPhone app (B-cycle) is available with the same information. System maps are also displayed at each B-station.

If you wish to check out a bike from a station, but there are no available bikes, you can use a web browser (DesMoinesBcycle.com) or iPhone app (B-cycle)to locate available bikes at nearby stations. There is a system map located at each station.

- What if I need to return a bike and a station is full? How do I find stations with empty docks?
If you have a bike checked out and wish to return it, but there are no available docks at a station, you can use a web browser (DesMoinesBcycle.com) or iPhone app to locate available bikes at nearby stations. Also, if you approach the kiosk at a full station, the kiosk will provide information about nearby stations with available docks, and you can also get 15 free minutes added to your ride so you can take the bike to an open station without incurring additional usage fees.

- What do the lights and sounds on the dock signify?
The lights and sounds at a dock provide visual and audible feedback regarding checkouts and checkins. For example, they indicate:
- When the dock has been woken up and is operational, all lights flash simultaneously.
- When the B-cycle computer is processing a checkout request, the hourglass symbol appears.
- When a bike is ready to be removed from its dock, you will hear and see a slow blinking of the green light and a slow beeping noise.
- When a checkout cannot take place due to a problem with a member’s account, illumination of the bad-card symbol will appear.
- When an individual bike or dock is broken, the red X will appear.
- When a successful return has taken place, you will see and hear three rapid blinks of the green light and three short beeps.
